Staying Healthy During the Holidays

With the holidays quickly approaching, it's easy to fall into the lapse of bad health habits, telling yourself over and over that you'll get back in gear at the start of the new year. Staying healthy during the holidays shouldn't be a chore. Get a jumpstart on your health and nutrition by implementing healthy eating habits and an exercise routine before the holidays, so that your piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving is the exception and not the rule!

Create an Eating Plan That Works For You

Just because there are a few days where you'll be tempted to eat sweets and foods that may not be great for you doesn't mean you have to throw away the next two months! Starting an eating regimen that cuts down on sugar and sodium means that you'll be less tempted when those days arrive. It also means that, if you do decide to indulge, a smaller piece of cake or pie will be more than enough to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Avoid the Liquid Calories

Many people drink with the mindset that liquid calories "don't count," however alcoholic beverages vary in serving sizes, based on the alcohol content of the drink and the amount of carbohydrates (typically in the form of sugar) it contains. Holiday drinks can be a real hindrance when it comes to staying healthy this time of year. Use low-calorie mixers, such as no-calorie soda or tonic water or lemon and lime wedges, to help reduce added calories.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking water and staying hydrated is one of the greatest things you can do for your overall health. Starting each morning with a glass of cold water gets your metabolism going for the day, and helps energize you to accomplish your goals. Drinking water in between alocoholic beverages will not only help you stay hydrated, but may help limit the number of alcoholic beverages you consume.
